Written self-checks

Write your complete response before opening the model answer. Compare both your answer and your reasoning.

Guide question M10

Tool-decision drill. A previous entry defines m = 5. You now intend to estimate both slope and intercept using y_1~m*x_1+b. What must you inspect before trusting the fit?

Show model answerHide model answer for question M10

Whether the old definition has fixed the slope.

Delete or change the old assignment so that m is an unknown fitting parameter rather than a fixed value of 5. Also verify the table pairs and intended column names. A regression can be mathematically valid for a constrained model but still differ from the free-slope model requested. Review Example 1.14 and Example 3.05.

Guide question M14

The solution of 8x = 7 is to be entered in a numeric-response field. Give an exact decimal entry.

Show model answerHide model answer for question M14

.875.

x = 7/8 = 0.875, so .875 is exact; 0.875 also fits. The prompt asks for the number itself, not a percentage. Do not multiply by 100 or shorten the terminating decimal to .88. Review Example 4.04.

Guide question M21

A student claims that (x + 4)2 = x2 + 16 for every real x because both expressions equal 16 at x = 0. Is the claim valid? Give a decisive check.

Show model answerHide model answer for question M21

No; x = 1 is a counterexample.

At x = 1, the left side is 25 while the right side is 17. Algebra explains the mismatch: (x + 4)2 = x2 + 8x + 16, so the claimed form omits 8x. One successful input does not establish an identity; one valid counterexample disproves it. Review Example 4.14.

Guide question M25

The exact answer is −7/3. Give a suitable decimal entry under the numeric-response character limit.

Show model answerHide model answer for question M25

-2.333.

−7/3 = −2.3333.... The entry -2.333 uses six characters including the minus sign and keeps the available decimal precision. The exact fraction -7/3 is another suitable entry, though this question requests a decimal. Do not enter a mixed number or omit the negative sign. Review Example 4.06.

Guide question M27

A default graph window shows no intersections between y = x2 and y = 1600. What is the positive solution of x2 = 1600, and what was wrong with the visual conclusion?

Show model answerHide model answer for question M27

40; the relevant intersections were outside the window.

402 = 1600, so the positive root is 40; the other root is −40. A useful window must include both the input scale and output level, such as −50 ≤ x ≤ 50 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 1800. Absence from a particular viewport is not absence from the mathematical graph. Review Example 2.08.

Guide question M28

For which real values of k does x2 + kx + 16 = 0 have exactly one distinct real root?

Show model answerHide model answer for question M28

k = −8 or k = 8.

The coefficient of x2 is fixed at 1, so this equation is always quadratic. A single distinct real root requires k2 − 64 = 0, hence k = ±8. The equations become (x + 4)2 = 0 and (x − 4)2 = 0. Unlike a variable-leading-coefficient problem, there is no additional linear case. Review Example 5.06.

Guide question M30

Workflow drill. You solve 8x = 21 in the calculator, then mark the question for review without entering an answer. What final response should be recorded, and why is the current state incomplete?

Show model answerHide model answer for question M30

Enter 21/8 or 2.625.

The exact solution is x = 21/8 = 2.625. Both displayed entries fit the numeric-response conventions. The calculation is complete, but the question remains unanswered until the value is typed in its response field. A review flag and a calculator result do not substitute for a recorded response. Review Example 5.13.
